SHUFFLE PRESENTS: NO UNIFORM AND BAD TASTE TAKEOVER W/ LIL SILVA + TERROR DANJAH
DOORS: 10:30 PM / PRICE: £5.00 / BOOKING FEE: £1.00 / AGE: 18+

So here we are about to hit the end of the student year! Shuffle has linked up with two of Sheffield’s best underground nights, No Uniform and Bad Taste! For this occasion they have put together a very special line-up featuring two of the best producer’s around at the moment!

21-year-old Lil Silva is fast becoming one of the most talked about artists on the UK Bass scene. Not only does he possess the musical understanding to work with genres such as American House, Funky and Grime but his ability also allows him to merge and blend styles. Silva’s flair manifests itself in his creative production techniques, showcasing a distinct sound which he looks to continually evolve. Always looking to shy away from convention, the young producer’s talents are becoming as renowned for their innovation as they are for the effect they are having on the scene. Prominent cultural magazine factmag.com has even gone as far as describing Lil Silva’s sound as ‘grime in disguise.’

Terror Danjah spent much of his early career running the Aftershock label, releasing what has gone on to become iconic Grime records from legends like D Double E, Skepta and Wiley, and playing a role in launching the careers of Kano, Tinie Tempah, Mz Bratt and countless others..

Not having enough time to make his own music, he decided to take some time out, and relaunch himself with a collection of his overlooked work while part of Aftershock entitled, ‘Gremlinz’ on Planet Mu in 2009. Kode 9, a long-time fan of Terror’s, and head of the legendary Hyperdub label, was excited to sign Terror Danjah as a solo artist with his debut single for the label ‘Acid’ in 2010, following with the well received Undeniable album later on in the year.”

Not satisfied with just being a respected member of Kode 9’s Hyperdub stable, which allowed him to do shows all over the UK, Europe and North America for the first time, Terror Danjah helped bring a young Elijah & Skilliam to the forefront of the Grime scene by being their first release on their then freshly minted Butterz label. Butterz has since gone from strength to strength under his close guidance, becoming the premier grime label in just over a year.

It was not long before Terror Danjah wanted a label venture again of his own to continue launching new names into the UK underground as he has always had a good ear for new talent. Hardrive Records’ stand-out track after a year in operation is produced by himself, with him bringing another new name into the fold in Ruby Lee Ryder. ‘Full Attention’ has been doing the rounds from Radio 1 to Rinse FM, and it has brought back DJs that have stayed away from Grime for years. With talent like D.O.K and Champion in the wings, they will be assaulting the Bass Music world for years to come.

Now with everybody’s full attention and working alongside Hyperdub & Butterz and the young producers from Hardrive, it is time to call Terror Danjah the Godfather of the reborn Grime scene.

Grime music isn’t exactly renowned for it’s subtlety. It’s overly hype, it’s a rush; but that’s precisely the point. In an interview that was published in the run up to the release of veteran grime producer Terror Danjah’s 2010 Undeniable album on Hyperdub he commented that he believed real grime music belongs in the club. Now thats something that you’ll probably have heard from a lot of writers and faces, but it’s most patently obvious when you listen to the music itself: the most powerful thing it has is its energy.

Set around 140bpm - a tempo that is probably most famous for providing the headspace for dubstep producers to fill - grime is purposefully hyperactive. When a producer deploys snare drums that hit in flourishes, like a lot of grime makers do, it imposes movement on listeners and when that percussive shuffle motion is stamped out in such a prevalent manner it dominates and drives a track into you. It’s something that gets reflected in the way a lot of emcees ride the beats, positively attacking it and matching the pace of the percussion with their syllable placement. When you combine that unrelenting energy with synthesized textures, infamous MIDI horn sections and booming bass lines, you get something that’s purposefully made to get your blood pumping. Like this…

Terror Danjah himself has a heritage when it comes to grime music and he’s had a big part in crafting this super kinetic perception of it. Part of the Nasty Crew when it started out, home to people like Jammer, Kano and D Double E, he then begat the Aftershock camp and made a ton of instrumental music that would later be collated by the Planet Mu label on the Gremlinz album, which cited and connected his influence on a new generation of producers. With high profile releases through Kode9’s Hyperdub, Butterz and his own Hardrive label, Terror is continuing to stamp that trademark cackle of his on club nights across the globe, ensuring that people get to experience his music in the environment it was tailor made for.

Playing here on the 16th March as part of the first ever Hyperdub takeover of Room One (full line uphere), Terror has put together a 30 minute mix that manages to cram in a whole heap of new music from him and his associates. It personifies the animation and exertion of a grime rave and comes complete with several moments where you think you can hear something familiar (Brandy, Paul Johnson’s ‘Get Down’ or Mr Oizo’s ‘Flat Beat’) but before you second guess the DJ, it gets bastardized and re-cut into something new.

TERROR DANJAH & RUBY LEE RYDER
FULL ATTENTION
Format: 12” EP
Catalogue Number: HDR006
Number of Discs: 1
Label: Hardrive
Release Date: 15 August 2011

PRICE: £5.99
Full Attention
Terror Danjah finally returns to the airwaves with his first new material since 2010’s ‘Undeniable’ album on Hyperdub. The masssively-anticipated ‘Full Attention’ is the first step in the resurrection of his patented “Rhythm & Grime” sound, the style he made his name with in the early noughties with vocalists like Shola and Sade Ama. This time out, Ruby Lee Ryder is his voice of choice, and her distinctive vocal has already landed the track on the BBC 1xtra playlist, with further spins on Radio 1 and Rinse FM, and it’s a fixture in the boxes of DJs like Skream, Mistajam and Target. Advance club promo has generated a ridiculously positive response right across the board, with hard support from Brackles, Swindle, Alex Nut, Blackdown, Wylie, and many many more, setting the scene for ‘Full Attention’ to become an anthemic club and commercial hit as soon as it reaches the shops. On the flip Mr Danjah drops his trademark Gremlinz logo for two 8 bar grime smashes that have been doing the rounds on Rinse FM for the last half year. ‘East Village’ is a toast to the nights Hardrive label hosted at the London club of the same name, and ‘Jeckle & Hyde’ (exclusive to this 12”) has been battered in the raves by Logan Sama, Zomby, and Elijah & Skilliam just to name only a few. This marks the beginning of a hefty release schedule for the Grime Kingpin including more high-impact singles and remixes on the way for Greensleeves, Butterz and Hyperdub.

explain us what is it all about grime nowadays? is it still a underground music? can you describe it’s popularity in UK comparing to dubstep?
Grime and Dubstep are siblings, they go hand in hand. Grime has a lot of the Mc’s in the national pop chart for example, Tinie Tempah, Dizzee Rascal, Chipmunk etc. But the Grime producers didn’t get the same success as the MC’s. Its only since Hyperdub, Planet Mu, Butterz & Hardrive are pushing the instrumental side of Grime.

what’s your behaviour to hip hop and house influences? is it necessary to make ‘hybrid’ music to be successful?
I think so, its always good to experiment, it keeps thing interesting.

few month passed since your last release with Joker so are you working on any remixes/EP’s/album at the moment?
Just released ‘Anger Management’ by Grime Don ‘P Jam’ on my imprint Hardrive, Also on my label Hardrive I’m releasing Funky and Bass Prince Champion’s ‘Motherboard EP’ which features club smash ‘Lose Control’. Also release Mz Bratt’s ‘Selecta’ remixes by ‘Bok Bok’ and ‘Royal T’ and also a free single download from ‘Lex NV’ at www.hardriverecords.net

do you know anything about grime producers outside UK? what’s the difference betwen them and native beat-makers?
There ain’t really any Grime producer that I’m aware outside the UK, they coin themselves Dubstep, for the obvious reason that Dubstep is more internationally know but I’m here to change that lol!

what do you like except of grime? your behaviour to juke/footwork?
I like Neo soul!

where did you get that cackle signature?
From a Jungle sample, I started using it as just a normal sfx, then when I stop using it, people said “wheres that laugh thingy gone, put back in your tracks”.

top-5 tracks in your current tracklist
1) East Village - Terror Danjah
2) Orangeade - Royal T
3) Missing Step - D.O.K
4) Lose Control - Champion
5) Mood Swings - Swindle

your favorite MC’s
D Double E

whom to watch in 2011? your experienced forecast for the scene. should we wait for the future/post-grime music and if yes what will it sound like?
I would say D.O.K, Royal T, P Jam, Champion, P Money, Ky Oshi, Elijah & Skilliam. I say the future of Grime is the Butterz and Hardrive label!

we will be much pleased if you come to Kiev with a dj set in a nearest future, by the way have you ever been to Eastern Europe before?
I would definitely love to dj in Kiev. I have played in Eastern Europe, I’ve played at Kracow in Poland last year October at Unsound festival, also at Kapital Bass in Moscow, Russia

thanks a lot for this nice conversation, and for the last can you say a few words for our readers and fans of Terror Danjah? (t’ll be a big honour for everyone here if you write smth in cyrillc though it’s up to you :) )

Date: Apr 15, 2011
Location: 103 Harriet, San Francisco, CA
Details: 10pm-4am • $15 presale (tickets available here) • 21+
It’s not everyday that you find former BBC radio jockey and future-music tastemaker Mary Anne Hobbs making a live appearance this far from her side of the pond, and even less often does it happen that she’s accompanied by a line-up of this quality. It’s also not everyday that XLR8R throws an issue release party, so let’s just say the two go hand-in-hand. Ms. Hobbs will be holding down the main dance floor, but the party will also feature a special XLR8R curated room with our new issue’s cover artist, Kode 9 (pictured above) and, making his SF debut, Joy Orbison, not to mention Roska, Terror Danjah, and more. The rest of the lineup is similarly jam-packed with burgeoning producers such as Lorn, Gonjasufi, Take, and others. Check the flier below for the evenings full roster.

RATTUS & KLOSE
MOXIE
PHAZE ONE
SAI WOBBLE SQUAD

Grime and UK underground super producer Terror Danjah heads things up! A veteran in the grime scene, in the past Terror has repped the likes of the original Nasty crew and Aftershock records and has since progressed with some massive releases on Kode 9′s much respected Hyperdub label, including the incredible full length album, Undeniable. He’s produced for the likes of Kano, Chipmunk and Sway and now, he continues to push the boundaries of underground sounds with his own Hardrive imprint and is one of the grime scene’s most respected champions! Expect dirty, dark and grimey London born beats & blips mashed with elements of UK funky, dubstep and the experimental electronica that make Terror Danjah so unique!

Joining him is label mate, partner in crime and one-of-a-kind female grime soldier, the fire-tongued MC Mz Bratt, who’s treating us to a special live performance! Hailing from East London, Bratt has emerged from the current UK underground dance scene as the lone female role model within a male dominated arena. Her exceptional talent struck a chord with Terror Danjah who took her under his wing. Bratt’s never looked back since, embarking on a huge US and European tour with electro, house and bass duo The Count and Sinden, which included shows at Glastonbury and Bestival. She has also featured on remixes and records with artists such as Wiley, Tinchy Stryder, Taio Cruz, Sadie Ama and Grammy nominated US Star Jazmine Sullivan, eventually forging her own unique signature electro-fused hip-hop sound. Last year Bratt hit hard with the Redlight produced club banger, Selecta and her electric live show is definitely going to blow the roof off at The Macbeth!

Terror Danjah and Mz Bratt are joined by Nerds residents Rattus Rattus and Klose One, who’ll of course be providing their usual mash-up of UK bass, dubstep, funky and garage fused party starters! Also in the house is Moxie, the multi-faceted female DJ talent who’s got sets at the highly acclaimed DMZ and Deviation nights under her belt, a residency with underground party and graffiti crew, ATG and a career on the rise with her unique amalgamation of dubstep, post-dubstep, house, soul, future garage and rare beats! After a string of massive club gigs and mixes for the likes of i-D Magazine, Moxie is one to watch!

Adam Wilson aka DJ Phaze One blends a unique mix of grime, funky and dubstep, first picked up by Manchester bass night, Murkage, where he now holds a residency. At the start of 2011, Phaze One began producing his own records, joining forces with his brother Joe (aka Blackstar) to form ‘Star-One’. Within a month their impromptu remix of the theme tune to popular children’s program Rastamouse clocked-up 100,000 hits on YouTube and airplay on BBC Radio 1 and 1Xtra. The two have recently remixed Jamie Woon’s latest single ‘Lady Luck’!

Sai Wobble Squad is a DJ known for spinning everything from party vibe hip-hop to the most gut wrenching dubstep and bassline you can dare to imagine, with all the ear carnage in between! Founding UK underground DJ and skateboard collective group Wobble Squad, they’ve taken bookings all over the country, the likes of One Love Festival, as well as the filthy fiesta of dubstep that is the Outlook in Croatia back in 2010!
