SHUFFLE PRESENTS: NO UNIFORM AND BAD TASTE TAKEOVER W/ LIL SILVA + TERROR DANJAH
DOORS: 10:30 PM / PRICE: £5.00 / BOOKING FEE: £1.00 / AGE: 18+

So here we are about to hit the end of the student year! Shuffle has linked up with two of Sheffield’s best underground nights, No Uniform and Bad Taste! For this occasion they have put together a very special line-up featuring two of the best producer’s around at the moment!

21-year-old Lil Silva is fast becoming one of the most talked about artists on the UK Bass scene. Not only does he possess the musical understanding to work with genres such as American House, Funky and Grime but his ability also allows him to merge and blend styles. Silva’s flair manifests itself in his creative production techniques, showcasing a distinct sound which he looks to continually evolve. Always looking to shy away from convention, the young producer’s talents are becoming as renowned for their innovation as they are for the effect they are having on the scene. Prominent cultural magazine factmag.com has even gone as far as describing Lil Silva’s sound as ‘grime in disguise.’

Terror Danjah spent much of his early career running the Aftershock label, releasing what has gone on to become iconic Grime records from legends like D Double E, Skepta and Wiley, and playing a role in launching the careers of Kano, Tinie Tempah, Mz Bratt and countless others..

Not having enough time to make his own music, he decided to take some time out, and relaunch himself with a collection of his overlooked work while part of Aftershock entitled, ‘Gremlinz’ on Planet Mu in 2009. Kode 9, a long-time fan of Terror’s, and head of the legendary Hyperdub label, was excited to sign Terror Danjah as a solo artist with his debut single for the label ‘Acid’ in 2010, following with the well received Undeniable album later on in the year.”

Not satisfied with just being a respected member of Kode 9’s Hyperdub stable, which allowed him to do shows all over the UK, Europe and North America for the first time, Terror Danjah helped bring a young Elijah & Skilliam to the forefront of the Grime scene by being their first release on their then freshly minted Butterz label. Butterz has since gone from strength to strength under his close guidance, becoming the premier grime label in just over a year.

It was not long before Terror Danjah wanted a label venture again of his own to continue launching new names into the UK underground as he has always had a good ear for new talent. Hardrive Records’ stand-out track after a year in operation is produced by himself, with him bringing another new name into the fold in Ruby Lee Ryder. ‘Full Attention’ has been doing the rounds from Radio 1 to Rinse FM, and it has brought back DJs that have stayed away from Grime for years. With talent like D.O.K and Champion in the wings, they will be assaulting the Bass Music world for years to come.

Now with everybody’s full attention and working alongside Hyperdub & Butterz and the young producers from Hardrive, it is time to call Terror Danjah the Godfather of the reborn Grime scene.

Grime music isn’t exactly renowned for it’s subtlety. It’s overly hype, it’s a rush; but that’s precisely the point. In an interview that was published in the run up to the release of veteran grime producer Terror Danjah’s 2010 Undeniable album on Hyperdub he commented that he believed real grime music belongs in the club. Now thats something that you’ll probably have heard from a lot of writers and faces, but it’s most patently obvious when you listen to the music itself: the most powerful thing it has is its energy.

Set around 140bpm - a tempo that is probably most famous for providing the headspace for dubstep producers to fill - grime is purposefully hyperactive. When a producer deploys snare drums that hit in flourishes, like a lot of grime makers do, it imposes movement on listeners and when that percussive shuffle motion is stamped out in such a prevalent manner it dominates and drives a track into you. It’s something that gets reflected in the way a lot of emcees ride the beats, positively attacking it and matching the pace of the percussion with their syllable placement. When you combine that unrelenting energy with synthesized textures, infamous MIDI horn sections and booming bass lines, you get something that’s purposefully made to get your blood pumping. Like this…

Terror Danjah himself has a heritage when it comes to grime music and he’s had a big part in crafting this super kinetic perception of it. Part of the Nasty Crew when it started out, home to people like Jammer, Kano and D Double E, he then begat the Aftershock camp and made a ton of instrumental music that would later be collated by the Planet Mu label on the Gremlinz album, which cited and connected his influence on a new generation of producers. With high profile releases through Kode9’s Hyperdub, Butterz and his own Hardrive label, Terror is continuing to stamp that trademark cackle of his on club nights across the globe, ensuring that people get to experience his music in the environment it was tailor made for.

Playing here on the 16th March as part of the first ever Hyperdub takeover of Room One (full line uphere), Terror has put together a 30 minute mix that manages to cram in a whole heap of new music from him and his associates. It personifies the animation and exertion of a grime rave and comes complete with several moments where you think you can hear something familiar (Brandy, Paul Johnson’s ‘Get Down’ or Mr Oizo’s ‘Flat Beat’) but before you second guess the DJ, it gets bastardized and re-cut into something new.

Terror Danjah finally returns to the airwaves with his first new material since 2010’s ‘Undeniable’ album on Hyperdub. The masssively-anticipated ‘Full Attention’ is the first step in the resurrection of his patented “Rhythm & Grime” sound, the style he made his name with in the early noughties with vocalists like Shola and Sade Ama. This time out, Ruby Lee Ryder is his voice of choice, and her distinctive vocal has already landed the track on the BBC 1xtra playlist, with further spins on Radio 1 and Rinse FM, and it’s a fixture in the boxes of DJs like Skream, Mistajam and Target. Advance club promo has generated a ridiculously positive response right across the board, with hard support from Brackles, Swindle, Alex Nut, Blackdown, Wylie, and many many more, setting the scene for ‘Full Attention’ to become an anthemic club and commercial hit as soon as it reaches the shops. On the flip Mr Danjah drops his trademark Gremlinz logo for two 8 bar grime smashes that have been doing the rounds on Rinse FM for the last half year. ‘East Village’ is a toast to the nights Hardrive label hosted at the London club of the same name, and ‘Jeckle & Hyde’ (exclusive to this 12”) has been battered in the raves by Logan Sama, Zomby, and Elijah & Skilliam just to name only a few. This marks the beginning of a hefty release schedule for the Grime Kingpin including more high-impact singles and remixes on the way for Greensleeves, Butterz and Hyperdub.
